Launched in the —15 season by 26 clubs, 6 leagues and the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF , the tournament features top teams from the first-tier leagues of countries across Europe.
The IIHF planned to launch another season but was ultimately forced to cancel the tournament due to problems finding sponsors during the concurrent global economic crisis and failure to agree on a tournament format.
On 9 December , a new tournament with the same name was launched by a group of 26 clubs from six different countries, born out of the European Trophy , starting in the —15 season.
The —15 season was played between August and February Each team played a double round-robin in their group, for a total of 6 games per team.
The 11 group winners as well as the top five group runners-up qualified for the playoffs. The playoffs were as a single-elimination tournament , with all rounds leading to the final played in two-game, home-and-away, total-goal series.
The final was a single game. In total, games were played, including the group and playoff stages. For the —16 season, the tournament was expanded to 48 teams, divided into 16 groups with three teams in each group.
The two first teams in each group advanced to the playoff round of In total, games were played. The —17 season was once more played with 48 teams, using the same format as in the previous season.
Starting with the fourth CHL season, the championship was reduced to 32 teams, and qualification was on sporting merits only.
The six founding leagues were represented by between three and five teams based on a three-year league ranking , while eight teams from the "challenge leagues" were represented by one team each.
No founding team was qualified automatically. A maximum of five teams from each country are permitted, with the entries allotted to each country according to a coefficient system best two leagues get five berths, next two get four, last two get three.
The remaining eight places are given to the champions of the Norwegian, Slovakian, French, Belarusian, Danish, British and Polish leagues, as well as the champion of the Continental Cup.
The teams are then be drawn into eight groups of four, with the top two teams in each group advancing to the knockout stage, which is contested as two-legged ties until a one-match final.
In the first 3 years of the competition, the 26 founding teams had guaranteed spots in the group stage "A license".
The condition of these earlier leagues had become intolerable. Many 1st and 2nd division teams were heavily in debt. The 2nd division attracted few sponsors and spectators.
As a result, many clubs were forced to fold or withdraw to the lower leagues. Fans and corporate sponsors focused on the 1st Bundesliga teams, forcing the elite teams to invest heavily in players to avoid relegation.
This increased budgets 25 percent over the previous two years. In the final Bundesliga season, —94, only 11 teams wanted to play in the 2nd Bundesliga.
Furthermore, two teams folded during and after the season. This made it difficult to attract serious sponsorship.
In January , 20 out of the remaining 21 1st and 2nd Bundesliga teams voted for creating a new entity, the DEL. Upon founding, the "DEL Betriebsgesellschaft mbH" was the first German professional sports league managed by an organization whose members were incorporated as well.
The goal behind the DEL was to create a league, based on the model of the North American NHL , in which teams could play consistently without relegation concerns and create a stable league.
Clubs in the DEL were required to conform to rules , which were designed to ensure long-term viability. Twelve clubs from the old 1st Bundesliga , and six from the 2nd Bundesliga came together as founding members.
The new league immediately attracted corporate sponsorship with the Krombacher Brewery , which was prominently featured on the new league logo.
The hope of avoiding the troubles of the old Bundesliga by stricter financial controls did not materialize. Hofherr was Mad Dogs former president and it was alleged that he must have known about their desperate financial situation.
The Bosman ruling , a decision of the European Court of Justice regarding the movement of labor in soccer, had profound influence on the league. The old Bundesliga had national character with German clubs competing for the German title using mostly German players.
After the ruling European Union players were excluded from the "foreign" player quota. This lowered costs significantly, enabling smaller teams to compete more effectively.
However, frequent player moves were not viewed positively by the fans, resulting in smaller attendance numbers. The —05 season was significant due to the NHL lockout.
The DEL is an independently run league, fully owned and operated by its 14 member teams. During the current season, players representing 16 nations have played at least one game in the KHL.
For the table presented below, the nationality "is determined based on the last country that the player represented in international competition.
If a player has never played for a national team, usually the country of birth is chosen as the player nationality, unless there is strong evidence indicating otherwise".
Therefore, a list of players born in Ukraine gives case-by-case details for some of those players.
